Whether or not we are thinking about it, our role as therapist or coach is an up-power role. The way we think about power and the way we embody that leadership role will inevitably impact the outcome/s of our work. Normative systems within many cultures and systems we are exposed to operate from a view of power in which “power-over” and “power-under” is the only way to understand it. In these systems, power is finite, scarce, and cannot be shared. This way of thinking about and embodying power is antithetical to supporting growth and healing for our clients.

If we can shift our view to a “power-with” perspective, we can shift to an understanding of power as infinite, exponential when shared, and abundant. In the therapy space, this leads to an environment of mutual empowerment and flourishing.

Different from simply talking about it, emotionally unlearning power-over/under ways of viewing power is necessary to practice an embodied power-with way of being with your clients. In this webinar I will define a “power-with” stance in the therapist role, talk about the unlearning process, and teach you two concrete brain-based practices that you can use to help you deepen your journey with mutual empowerment within your leadership role as therapist or coach.
